Wonder Woman got me wondering, what does the word ‘wonder’ actually mean?  I tend to use it more as a saying, such as “that’s wonderful!” or “You are wonderful!”.  And then I wondered, when I think of the new movie Wonder Woman, what was DC Comics really trying to say?  Why did they come up with that name?  There are many adjectives that could describe a woman super-hero, why Wonder Woman?  So I looked up the word ‘wonder’ in the dictionary and here’s what I found:

noun: wonder
  1. a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable.
“he had stood in front of it, observing the intricacy of the ironwork with the wonder of a child”

      “the wonders of nature”
    • a strange or remarkable person, thing, or event.

      “a wonder drug”
    • a surprising event or situation.
“it is a wonder that losses are not much greater”
verb: wonder
  1. desire or be curious to know something.
“how many times have I written that, I wonder?”
    synonyms: ponder, think about, meditate on, reflect on, muse on, puzzle over, speculate about, conjecture;

    be curious about
“I wondered what was on her mind”

“I wonder whether you have thought more about it?”
    • feel doubt.
“I wonder about such a marriage”
  2. feel admiration and amazement; marvel.

I read with wonder all the wonderful meanings in the word ‘wonder’.  And I started thinking about the women I know and my life as a business owner.  I have always been around strong women and pretty good role models.  Most of the women I know are strong, yet soft.  Tough, but kind.  Brave, yet cautious.  Independent, yet not wanting to be alone.  Smart, yet not in the same sense as men.  We tend to approach problems differently, yet can always find a solution.  We can take the hits, yet get back up again.  Women are beautiful, unexpected, amazing, fascinating.  We are remarkable people and we create miracles (babies).  As a woman in the business world, I have never felt the glass ceiling.  I have never been discounted for my thoughts or views.  I have never one time felt less than anyone else in the room. Women are strong and equal and powerful, yet have a ‘wonder’ about them.

You, DC Comics, could not have done a better job with the name.

With love from Grand Haven,
